The Best Meal
Text: John 4:26-34
Theme: Jesus’ food was doing his Father’s will.
Key verses: “Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman…” (v. 27). “Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, ‘Rabbi, eat something.’ But Jesus replied, ‘I have a kind of food you know nothing about.’ ‘Did someone bring him food while we were gone?’ the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: ‘My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.'” (v. 31-34).
What God said to me: Good Monday morning! So glad you would meet with me this morning. I love investing time with you and speaking to you through my Word. Dwayne, you are cumbered about with much serving, like Martha was. Choose the “good part” this week, and sit at my feet listening to me more than doing for me–as Mary did. Had the disciples been more astute, more in-tune, perhaps they would have realized what Jesus meant when he said he had food they knew nothing of. Jesus’ food was to do his Father’s will–my will. Remember what Jesus said in his Sermon on the Mount? He said they that hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled. Another way to express being filled is that Jesus is food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. Dwayne, your food, your nourishment, your satisfaction and fulfillment should come above all from following close to Jesus. You should listen attentively to the Holy Spirit’s still, small voice today. Listen and obey whatever he tells you to do. Don’t allow your flesh to rule you. Your fleshly human desires can wait. Put doing my will above your own, and you will understand and testify that you, too, have food that others know nothing about.
What I said to God: Holy Lord, what a privilege to serve You today. Forgive me for those moments this past weekend when I allowed my flesh to rule me. I choose today to sit at Your feet and soak up Your truth and wisdom. I will follow You today and obey whatever You tell me to do. I will do this only by Your grace and power at work in me. Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and flow through me to encourage and help those around me. Protect and bless my wife and boys today. Thank You that Justin wants to do a Bible study with me tonight. He initiated it–so thankful! Help Sonia be encouraged and strengthened today, and show us Your will for the future. Thank You for our wonderful church family and staff. I know it’s a privilege to serve in Your church. Help us not take it for granted or lose our joy and gratefulness through it.
