A Way Out

Text: John 8:11-12

Theme: Jesus offers rescue from our darkness

Key verses: “And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more.’ Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’

What I Believe God Said to Me: Good morning, son. I’ve opened the door for you to be at the cabin to meet with me and write your next book. I’ve blessed you with the health you need, the help you need, and the time and focus needed to finish this important project. Be careful that you don’t squander or misuse this amazing opportunity. As you look up from your computer screen and see the beautiful lake right in front of you, remember it represents my grace and peace in your life. I’ve blessed you with much more than you deserve. Don’t take that for granted. Unto whom much is given much shall be required. I sent my Son, Jesus the Christ, to earth to die for your sins and the sins of man. What he said to the adulterous woman, he said to all of you. Don’t go on sinning. More than that, you don’t have to sin any longer. Jesus didn’t just say not to do it. Jesus came to provide a way out of sin altogether. Don’t miss the power and deep significance of his words. You don’t have to walk in darkness. Jesus is the light of the world. You know how scary it feels groping around in a pitch dark room having no idea what’s around you or what you may run into. That’s how this world was before my Son came to light the way. What would you do if you had no light. How would your life–your world–be without the sun shining in it each and every day? Now, think if you dare on how different your life would be if not for the light of my Son shining in your heart each day? And that Son never goes down, never leaves you, never abandons you. You literally don’t have to walk in darkness ever again. You literally don’t have to sin and do stupid repulsive things against me again. You have been set free. You have been given Light. And that holy eternal Light leads to eternal life with me.

What I said to God: Thank You, Father, for speaking so clearly to me this morning. I’m blown away (again) by Your mercy and grace and power and promises. Forgive me when I take the light of Your Son lightly, when I ignore the still, small voice of my Shepherd, when I turn head-long into sin, knowing I am leaving the path illuminated by Your holy light and protection. Thank You that You didn’t just say to the adulterous woman, “Don’t sin.” You gave her another chance at life, to discover true light and hope. You gave her an opportunity to walk into the Light and walk with the Light of the World. “Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness, Opened my eyes, let me see Beauty that made this heart adore You, Hope of a life spent with You.” Thank You for giving me that hope for a life forever with You.
