Explaining Worship
Text: John 4:19-26
Theme: Who better to explain worship than The Messiah?
Key verses: “Jesus replied, ‘Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem…But the time is coming–indeed it’s here now–when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.’ The woman, said, ‘I know the Messiah is coming…When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’ Then Jesus told her, ‘I AM the Messiah.'”
What God said to me: Good morning son. Glad you got to sleep in and rest. I like giving my children rest! When my Son speaks you had better listen; and what he said about worship in this passage has so much depth and application that you could invest your entire life and not mine all of its gold. Who better to explain worship than the One who sat at my right hand for all of eternity past observing how worship is supposed to happen, the way it continuously flows in heaven? Who better to explain how to worship than my Son, with whom I am well pleased, the One who always does what pleases me? Jesus, the Messiah, knows about worship and deserves complete worship from those He died to save. Listen and take heed to anything Jesus, the Messiah, instructs you about true me-pleasing worship. He is my Son, and he knows how best to worship me. The Holy Spirit who abides in your spirit now will teach you how to better worship me “in spirit.” He will also show you any areas where your worship of me isn’t completely truthful. Worship–bold, true, acceptable, transformational–that’s the only kind of worship that my Son and the Holy Spirit will explain to you and demands from you.
What I said to God: Holy Lord and precious omnipotent Father, You know all things; You are omniscient and perfect in all Your ways. Thank You for speaking clearly to me today about the all-important practice of pure and holy worship. Teach me through the Holy Spirit and through the Word how to worship You more and better. I realize I can invest my entire life and not completely grasp what Jesus shared with the woman at the well about worship, but help me invest the rest of my earthly life trying! You are worthy to receive power and honor and glory and praise. You alone are seated on the throne of heaven. You alone are worthy of our praise forever. You alone. You alone!
