Don’t Forget
Text: 2 Peter 3:1-10
Theme: Important things the saints should remember and never forget.
Key verses: “This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory. I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles. Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires” (v. 1-3). “They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command…Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. But you must not forget this one things, dear friends…The Lord isn’t really slow about his promise…No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief…” (v. 5-10).
What God said to me: Dwayne, just saying something to you through my Word can be a challenge. You have struggled to focus and make time for these meetings with me of late. Have you forgotten that you can nothing without me? Oh you are praying plenty right now, for you see your ship potentially sinking financially. Thus, you pray a lot, knowing I am your only source of income and success. But praying alone without seeking counsel and direction from my Word is dangerous and vastly insufficient. I want you to remember to seek me with all your heart and to do your seeking in my written Word. Peter wanted his readers to remember some very important things as well. Basically it is summed up like this: Remember the truth; remember there will be liars, and never forget my love, patience and ultimate judgment. Dwayne, you must remember these things too. The way you recall the truth is by constantly reading and studying my Word. You can watch out for deceivers and not be duped by them by following closely in my way and listening daily to my Spirit. And you can keep a mindful eye on my patience and judgment by thinking often of what I saved you from and by praying for those around you that you encounter each day. I love them and died for them just as I love and died for you. It is not my will that any perish but that all come to repentance. I love this world so much that I gave my only begotten Son to die for it. Never forget that.
What I said to God: Thank You, my Savior and Lord, for speaking to me this morning. I am humbled that You would take notice of me and want to meet with me and commune with me like this. I praise You for Your amazing love and grace and power. There is no one like You. Forgive me when I fret about things I can’t control. My job is to walk Your trail and follow Your voice each day. I am to trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey. May I remember the things You’ve shown me today, things that Peter wanted us to hear and always keep in our minds and hearts.
