His Power Overshadows Our Problems
Text: Psalm 77
Theme: Recalling God’s greatness can distill any worries and problems we have.
Key verses: “When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted” (v. 2). “I think of the good old days, long since ended, when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now. Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me?” (v. 5-7). “And I said, ‘This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.’ But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works. O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you? You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations” (v. 10-14). “When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths” (v. 16). “Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters–a pathway no one knew was there! You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds” (v. 19-20).
What God said to me: Dwayne, this psalm is loaded with insight about the human soul and how my greatness can sooth the worried mind. Asaph was one of the most influential worship leaders in the Bible. Yet, even a Psalm-writer and prominent leader of worship had bad days and times of utter despair; that shows that no one is immune from down times. Asaph literally thought I had abandoned him! Yet in the midst of his lowest moments he recalled; he remembered. He took time to look up and focus on my greatness. He turned to the only thing he knew was reliable–to my Word and to the stories of my faithfulness in the past. Then he actually forgot about his own troubles. He found himself so in awe of my power that his own problems seemed insignificant. Did you notice what he said about the Red Sea? It served as a metaphor for the troubles rising up against him. His personal issues “saw” me and trembled! And Asaph knew I would lead him on a pathway through his sea of troubles that “no one knew was there!” Dwayne, I am your Shepherd. You are my sheep. Follow me wherever I lead you. Never fail to trust me and obey me at all costs. Even when the heavens seem like brass, I am the God of great wonders. Recall what I have done.
What I said to God: Holy Father, You are indeed the mightiest of all gods. There is no one who compares to You. I love and adore You and lay my life before You today, as a living sacrifice. May I be holy and acceptable to You. Thank You for this powerful insight from Asaph.
