Better Things Waiting
Text: Hebrews 10:32-36
Theme: Patient endurance brings great reward.
Key verses: “Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering” (v. 32b). “…You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever. So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised” (v. 34b-36).
What God said to me: Dwayne, focus. Quit doing work like Martha before you do listening like Mary. Who you are is far more important than what you do. I know you feel you are busy doing the Lord’s work, but more often than not, you’re really just avoiding direct, intentional, focused time on me and in my Word. You can do nothing without me. You are a branch, and you must be plugged into the Vine. It is from me and me only that you draw nourishment, sustenance, strength, favor, common and uncommon sense, wisdom, and joy. Remember back to your childhood days, Dwayne. Remember how powerfully my hand was on you, drawing you to myself. Remember how you would get away to the woods and mountains and read my Word and commune with me for hours at a time. Recall how much you clung to me, relied on me and drew joy and peace from my presence and power on your life. Now, think back to how difficult many of those days were for you as your classmates and certain church members ganged up on you, ridiculed and belittled you and tried to get you the turn away from me. I allowed those difficult valleys in your life to prepare you for how I’m using you now. Do not throw away the confident trust you had in me. You endured then through the trials–endure now through the discouragement and temptations. In due time you will reap a harvest if you faint not. Eye has not seen and ear has not heard what I have in store for those who love me. You can’t even imagine all that awaits you on the other side. Stay the course; finish your race; keep the faith.
What I said to God: Holy Lord, I praise You today for speaking to me as I sit on this front porch of our temporary home. You have blessed me way beyond what I deserve. You have given me a beautiful and faithful and loving family. Please forgive me when I entertain if only for a moment the thought of quitting on you or turning my back on following your will and way. Where would I go? You have the words of life. Help me lift my eyes unto the hills from whence comes my strength. Help me live everyday with eternity in mind.
